The Power of a Human Centered Leader: What Nurses Say They Need Most

///

Nurses Week 2026 is here, and nurse leaders everywhere have asked the same question: What can I do this year that will feel meaningful to my team?

Gifts are thoughtful. Celebrations matter. But when you listen closely to nurses across generations, specialties, and settings, what they want most isn’t something you can buy.

They want a leader who creates an environment where they can thrive. They want a Human-Centered Leader.

A Human‑Centered Leader models well‑being even in a fast‑paced, high‑stress environment. By prioritizing their own well‑being, they give their teams permission to do the same.

They lead in a way that develops others professionally, recognizing each person’s strengths and expertise. They co‑create an environment where passion for practice, excellence, and patient safety can flourish.

Human‑Centered Leaders build strong, effective teams by engaging diverse perspectives and encouraging collaborative, creative solutions. They measure success not by uniformity of thought, but by the richness of ideas brought forward and the courage to use those ideas to make the best decisions for patients and staff.

And perhaps most importantly, they uphold their teams through relationships grounded in humanity. They recognize that imperfection is part of being human. They strive to grow in emotional intelligence every day through communication, motivation, and genuine connection with their teams and colleagues.

So, what does this mean for Nurses Week?

It means that what nurses want this week is exactly what they want the other 51 weeks of the year: to feel fulfilled in their role, trusted as professionals, and supported in their environment. This is the foundation for thriving in the workplace.

So, how can you become more aware of nurses’ feelings about their work environment?

Consider asking these questions, maybe one per week, when you’re rounding on staff members. Note that they are connected to the four leadership dimensions associated with being a Human-Centered Leader. I’m hoping they will create meaningful conversations and reflections:

  1. Do you feel you have permission to prioritize your well-being? If not, what would help? What’s getting in the way? (The Self)
  2. Do you see a path forward to grow in your practice here? Do you have a mentor? What resources do you need? (The Awakener)
  3. What strengths do you feel you bring to this team? Are your strengths recognized? Are they utilized? (The Connector)
  4. What helps you feel seen and appreciated for who you are and not just what you do? How can your peers and I do more to support that? (The Upholder)

And as you reflect on your own leadership, consider taking the Human‑Centered Leadership in Healthcare® Self‑Assessment to identify which principles you can strengthen to create the conditions where your team can truly thrive.

This Nurses Week, give your team the gift they want most: a Human‑Centered Leader who sees them, supports them, and creates an environment where they can thrive.

Happy Nurses Week 2026.

Be well.
Lead well.
