During the pandemic, we got into the habit of calling healthcare workers heroes. While we should applaud the many heroic acts that healthcare workers perform on daily basis, we need to be careful about putting people on a pedestal. Even heroes need to be vulnerable enough to ask for help when they need it.
The greatest example of this is Superman. Despite the hardships that Superman went through as a child and the issues he faced as an adult, he was told not to share his story and to keep secrets. In this short six-minute video, Quint Studer explains why Superman really could have benefitted from therapy. It takes courage to share our stories, to help ourselves, and to help each other.
Even heroes need help sometimes. Heroic acts are great but don’t be such a hero that you don’t take care of yourself. Resilience is taking care of yourself so that you can take care of other people.
